Arsenal -v- Aston Villa

Football Well struck goal for Arsenal’s 5th as the final whistle blows. The officials can be delighted with their performance which ensured full control was always achieved. The aspects of fitness, work rate, sound decision making from credible positions and the selling of the decision were all well displayed and if he can build on this game his career will be moving in an upward direction. Well done to the assistants too whose judgement gave added credibility to the teamwork and combined performance. That is all from me and I hope you’ve enjoyed the game. We continue our coverage of all refereeing matter in the Premier League at 4.00 with Southampton -v- Swansea City so please stay with us for that game. Three added minutes as another advantage played putting Arsenal on the attack resulting in another dhot on goal, but easily saved. Arsenal come again and score by Bellerine – his first Arsenal goal.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:17:23

Approaching time allowed and Anthony can be delighted with his control of the game as he has delivered all his decisions to expectation. His fitness and work rate have been the foundation upon which his game has been successfully built. His close proximity to play has enabled him to sell his decisions and I have been particularly impressed with his penetration into the penalty area where those vital awards have to be made. That was an aspect of his game we worked on in Dallas Cup and I’m delighted to see that he still has the thought to continue that practice. Well done.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:12:51

Villa are low on goals and confidence whilst Arsenal have plenty of both. They almost create a 5th but it goes out for another corner to the Gunners. Not cleared but the header easily saved.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:09:50

Delivering accurate decisions by the referee to the expectation and perception of the players is an important skill which if successfully carried out negates dissent following the award. This has been achieved by Anthony today as we move into the last 10 minutes of the game.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:07:51

Foul gives Villa a freekick in a good position – spray time for Anthony as he estimates a good 9.15 but the shot is over the bar.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:05:02

Westwood on Sanchez off for Villa. Good award of the penalty by Anthony as he penetrated the penalty area. Arsenal sub – Flamini on replacing Ramsey. The Wenger tactics have been superb with his substitutions in creating the 4th goal.

TS at 2015-02-01 16:02:11

Penalty to Arsenal as Villa keeper Guzan brings down Akpon but he almost saves the kick – Cazorla scores. GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:59:26

Two subs for Arsenal. Akpom and Rosicky on Giroud and Walcott off as Wenger changes his attack to try and improve the goal difference. His defence has been superb to compound the theory that defenders win games and forwards decide by how many! Corner to Villa awarded from a greT position by Anthony.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:55:40

Ozil tackled by the corner flag before caution for Gil for a reckless challenge. Correctly awarded. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-02-01 15:53:35

Here come the subs! Agbonlahor on for Cleverly and Sinclair also on for Villa. More awareness now required by the officials.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:51:09

GOAL! Walcott scores Arsenal’s third – game over!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:49:44

Fourth Official Bobby Madley is also well known to me, having been a part of my Dallas Cup coaching group in the years before he was promoted to the Select Group list of Premiership Referees. He’s had a difficult time in getting a long run of games as a Premiership referee and many believe he has not been treated fairly. It is up to him to show the powers that be, how well he can referee at this level and I wish him well in doing that. He is a good communicator, with an open personality and he should be perfect for the management of the contrasting characters who are today’s managers in the technical area. The Diego Costa stamping incident at Chelsea this week happened directly in front of the 4th Official and should have been seen – perhaps that was discussed in the pre-match brief today to give an extra focus of awareness for such occasions.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:47:11

Coming up to the hour mark and we can expect some substitutions being made as Villa need more fire power to get into the game. The next goal will be vital! Fourth Official Bobby Madley can expect to be busy in the next 10 – 15 minutes!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:45:07

Villa need to step it up now and it could be a testing time for the officials but Clark correctly cautioned for a reckless challenge on Walcott. Anthony has upped his game! Well done. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-02-01 15:43:17

Foul on Ozil in front of the dugouts correctly awarded and the game restarted quickly. Ozil scores the 2nd Arsenal goal GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:41:18

The low key game plan of the officials seems to be working well but there is just a fear that something might erupt to give them problems. Let’s hope not!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:39:12

First five minutes of the 2nd half have been evenly contested before Sanchez loose arm catches Giroud in the face. Free kick and a word from the referee sorts out the incident.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:32:07

Second half under way. What changes will the managers have made to their tactical formations? Adjustments to the referee’s positioning might be necessary as he watches to see what changes have been made by the managers. Remember that the tactical formations of the teams (4-4-2 or 5-3-2-1) have different positional requirements for the referee to get the best viewing angles without being in the way of play.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:20:32

Half Time

A solid first half for the officials and no cautions issued in the first 45 minutes. Outstanding offside judgement by Gary Beswick and both assistants have displayed solid teamwork in their contribution to the control of the game. Let us hope for more of the same in the final 45 minutes. Back after half-time!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:18:15

Approaching time allowed of 1 minute (a bit short in my opinion) and Coquelin fortunate not to be cautioned for a reckless challenge as the half-time whistle blows. A cup of Yorkshire tea is now required for this blogger. Please let us have your thoughts on throughout the game.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:13:21

Villa almost scored but Arsenal caught them on the break. Excellent sprint the full length of the field displayed by Anthory – superb!

TS at 2015-02-01 15:11:59

Injury after 40 minutes holds up play with the 8th minute goal by Giroud still separating the teams.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:10:39

Hand ball spotted well by AR Bryan and signalled correctly. Both assistants are contributing to teamwork and the control of the game.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:08:48

Another Arsenal corner in this battle of the buildings! That’s a bit subtle!! Another offside by Arsenal spotted by Gary Beswick.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:05:34

35 minutes gone and the referee has not had any serious challenge to his authority as he tries to maintain a low profile. Player discipline has so far been good and he will hope it continues.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:02:23

Early offside flag again delivered by AR Beswick whose judgement has been terrific so far. Well done.

TS at 2015-02-01 15:01:13

Offside flag rules out another Arsenal goal. Another good decision from AR Beswick.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:59:41

Advantage played to Arsenal but it came to nothing. Villa have increased their share of possession in the last 10 minutes but need a goal to get back in the game. Next goal is vital!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:56:32

Corner to Villa – awareness of grappling will be interesting and Anthony came closer and there was no evidence of it. At the other end Arsenal hit the post!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:53:31

Mid point of the first half with Arsenal looking comfortablely in control of the game but Villa stringing a few passes together to try and find a way back. The referee needs to remain focused and retain his quiet control.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:49:58

Good advantage played and a good turn of speed by Anthony to keep close to play. His fitness looks very good.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:47:58

Corner Arsenal followed by a second one. Headed off the line for a 3rd corner easily collected by the keeper. Good Arsenal pressure.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:46:37

The first quarter of an hour gone and the referee needs to show his hand and define his tolerance level to the players. He became the focus of attention after the last two decisions.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:44:40

Dissent by action Coquelin after a freekick awarded against him. Ignored by the referee who made his direction award with the finger instead of the full hand. Delphi lucky after a coming together too. Starting to get interesting!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:42:19

Ground took his goal very well and is leading the Arsenal Assault on the Villa defence.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:41:20

Very close offside decision by AR Beswick on the Arsenal goal but TV accepted his decision. First foul awarded on 10 minutes! It is all Arsenal.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:38:24

Goal Arsenal GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:36:23

Good position by Anthony on that Arsenal attack as play moved into the penalty area.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:34:36

Mr Wenger having zip trouble with his jacket early in the game!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:33:43

Anthony was a bit central in his position on that Villa attack and almost in the way of the shot.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:32:07

Both teams have white sleeves! If an arm goes up in the penalty area – it could be very difficult to judge the correct decision! A bit naive on the part of the officials.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:30:11

The whistle blows and we’re underway. Please let us have your thoughts on throughout the game.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:26:33

The teams are in the tunnel ready for the game. Today would have been the 100th birthday of the legendary Stanley Matthews!

TS at 2015-02-01 14:25:32

Referee Anthony Taylor will have very clearly defined his game plan to his team in preparation for this encounter. It was a delight for me to work with Anthony as his coach at Dallas Cup prior to his attaining Premier League status and going on to earn his FIFA badge. His international experience will hopefully help him today as he hopes to progress in Europe and push the other leading Elite FIFA referees officiating on the Premier League. I wish him well in attaining his goals. He will be very aware that he needs to maintain his focus on domestic games and to perform consistently well throughout the current season and into the next.

TS at 2015-02-01 14:11:24

Good afternoon and welcome to You Are The Ref which features first today, this potentially exciting class between ‘in form’ Arsenal and a Aston Villa side who have under performed so far this season and are currently in the ‘danger’ zone before today’s game. Yesterday saw the League leaders meet at Stamford Bridge and referee Mark Clattenburg control the potentially difficult game with consummate ease. Let us hope Anthony Taylor displays the same skills today. Arsenal go into the game in 6th position but three points today will take them above their great rivals Spurs into 5th on 42 points. Villa by contrast would climb from 16th to 13th if they win the game. It has all the makings of a tense game.
