Summary. What a difference between the two halves. The first half was relatively trouble free apart from the yellow card for Ake which should have in fact been a red card for a DOGSO. Big error by the Referee and a fortunate break for Bournemouth. This apart the Referee had a good half . However, it just shows you can never relax and think you have got the game well in control. While Mike Dean was keen to allow the game to flow where possible, players suddenly began to "dive" into challenges which left the Referee with little choice but to abandon his "low key" man-management style which was not working and being disregarded. This led to a further nine yellow cards as players continued to commit rash challenges. The culmination was a second yellow card for Sterling for foolishly celebrating his very late winning goal by running into the crowd. Once again leaving the Referee with no choice. In all this Mike Dean showed a calm and composed attitude in working hard to ensure the game did not get out of control. A less experienced Referee may not have been able to do this. Whether or not the failure to deal correctly with the DOGSO in the first half had any bearing with the events of the second who knows, but it does go to show how important it is to get the "big decisions" correct. That one decision spoiled Mike Dean's performance.

Once again a good physical challenge allowed by Mike Dean. Application of advantage to City but when nothing accrued the Referee rightly stopped play and penalised the original offence.

First Half Summary.:   A good first half from the Officials point of view. The one decision was the offence committed by Ake on Jesus. Mike Dean had a clear view and clearly considered if the foul constituted a DOGO or not. In his opinion it did not and hence only a yellow card for AKE. On another day the decision may well have been different. Referees can not and do not take into account what a player's skill or speed may or may not affect the situation and hence make a judgement accordingly. Overall the Referee has managed the players well using not only the "quiet word" when appropriate, but also making good use of the captain the re-enforce his message and authority. He has adjusted his movement and positioning to suit not only the patterns of play but also the warm conditions and has never looked uncomfortable. Hopefully the same calm approach to the second period..

Half Time

SM at 2017-08-26 13:14:23

Injury to Ake with no other player near him. This is the time for the Referee to conserve energy while the injured player is assessed.

SM at 2017-08-26 13:08:57

The Referee shows awareness that not all physical contact is an offence, hence allows play to continue when a City player uses his strength quite legitimately to win the ball.

SM at 2017-08-26 13:05:38

The Referee again excellently positioned to detect the foul committed by Defoe. Close proximity gives added credibility to decisions. Foul by Danilo penalised and a "quiet word" from the Referee.

SM at 2017-08-26 13:00:20

Good movement by the Referee as City continue to attack to ensure he is well positioned to get a clear view of challenges, particularly within the penalty area.

Ake commits foul on Jesus and Yellow Cardgiven to Ake.  Could have been a dismissal ? Don't think so. I think the Referee got the decision correct.

SM at 2017-08-26 12:50:28

First corner of the game to Manchester City.   A good advantage applied for Manchester City but City didn't make the best use of it.

SM at 2017-08-26 12:44:14

Again the Referee well positioned to detect an illegal challenge.

What a fabulous strike by Daniels to score Bournemouth's first PL goal of he season. GOAL! 1-0 to Bournemouth

SM at 2017-08-26 12:40:50

On warm days such as this it is important to conserve energy when possible and Mike Dean is already using his experience to use every chance to do this while always being well positioned to judge tackles. A good decision to penalise Otamendi and already sensibly using the Manchester City captain(Kompany) to emphasize his displeasure at the repeat offending. Good man-management. Let's see if it has the desired effect.

SM at 2017-08-26 12:33:11

An immediate chance to show authority penalising Arter and thyen an offence by Fernandinho. Free kicks expected on both occasions and the Referee did not disappoint.

SM at 2017-08-26 12:31:13

Almost ready to go.    Mike Dean will be hoping for a less helter skelter game than his first this season when he officiated at the Arsenal v Leicester game . He will be sure to display his usual calm approach.

Away we go in beautiful sunshine on the south coast.

SM at 2017-08-26 11:58:20
