Summary A close game which was to be expected from teams who are 1st and 4th in the league. The game was punctuated by numerous careless fouls which were all recognised and penalised by the Referee who worked hard to adopt positions which were always appropriate. All the yellow cards and the red card were completely warranted; hence it is a shame that the one “big” decision that needed to be made was judged incorrectly. This seems to be very prevalent this season and is something that surely needs addressing as a matter of urgency. If FIFA Referees’ can’t get these type of decisions correct what message does this send out to their colleagues and does nothing to regain our former  reputation  of being the best in the world. Thanks for joing us. Hope you’ve enjoyed Christmas and we send best wishes for a Happy New Year.

SM at 2014-12-28 16:31:17
Constant pressure from Chelsea as they seek a goal to put them ahead. The Officials need to maintain high concentration and composure particularly after the earlier error of judgement.

SM at 2014-12-28 16:29:08
Well the first “big” decision gone and an error of judgement. The replay shows the Southampton full back slipped but definately made contact with the Chelsea players’ leg which caused him to fall. Certainly not simulation by the Chelsea player!

SM at 2014-12-28 16:05:04
It does appear that the powers that be are more concerned with the accuracy of throws and goal kicks rather than on getting the “big” decisions correct.l It is these “big” decisions that seem to be  incorrect on a regular basis and this is not acceptable from any Referee let alone our “top” Referees Today we have so far no complaints. Let’s hope I can still say that at the end of the game.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:59:32
Half time summary. A good game which has been punctuated by many minor careless challenges which the Referee had always detected. However, the Referee has shown the confidence in allowing good advantage on a number of occasions to add flow to the game when possible and always uses a clear arm signal. His positioning has ensured he his always credibly positioned  when making judgements and hence control has not been threatened. Good use of the “quiet word” has also  been noted but this may not always be appropriate in close games such as this. We shall see how the second half pans out. Let us have your thoughts throughout the game on You-Are-The-Ref.com

2 minutes of added time to be played and Chelsea equalise as this is indicated.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:48:05
Foul by Southampton No19 brings him a serious verbal rebuke from the Referee. Two more minor offences is making the game a little stop-start.  Yoshida commits a careless challenge jumping into an opponent. Again the Referee is well positioned to award the free-kick.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:44:04
Chelsea No12 commits foul. Perhaps Chelsea players becoming a little frustrated . The Referee is keeping control at a good level and has missed little so far.  Offences by Chelsea racking up and the Referee has spotted everyone. No arguments from players at decisions given. This indicates a degree of respect for the Referee.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:41:08
A late tackle by Fabregas leads to another Southampton freekick.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:38:07
Things hotting up with another foul by a Chelsea defender. The Referee needs to keep a close eye on some of these strong challenges when players are brought to the ground. So far his authority is being maintained well.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:36:38
Matic commits late illegal challenge on Pele and correctly receives a cautionYellow Card

SM at 2014-12-28 15:35:37

SM at 2014-12-28 15:31:38
Good crabbing movement by both Assistants to maintain position while keeping the field of play in view at all times.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:30:04
Good detection of offence of “backing into an opponent” by Tadic. Once again no complaints by players as Referee wel positioned.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:28:39
Good offside detection by Assistant Beswick and a prompt flag signal.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:27:29
Corner kick to Chelsea. Referee well placed on the edge of the penalty area to obtain a clear view of any incident.  The Referee continues to work hard to remain in close proximity to play at al times.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:24:29
Another god advantage played by the Referee and then a positive sprint to be on the spot to award a free kick for another Chelsea foul.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:22:36
Notice how the Referee introduces backward running to keep moving while keeping play within view. First goal goes to Southampton. Assistant Cann well positioned to see there was no offside offence.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:14:55
Corner kick to Chelsea. Not too much jostling apparent. Let’s hope this situatiuon remains throughout. Another corner for Chelsea. The low sun is causing Assistant Beswick difficulties but he maintains a watchful brief by shading his eyes with one hand.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:11:39
The Referee is working hard in these early stages to ensure he is always very close to play.  A sensible way to assert authority in a very unobtrusive manner.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:10:04
Goos flag signal by Assistant to ensure throw direction is correct and Referee acts on the advice of his Assistant showing good early teamwork.

SM at 2014-12-28 15:08:47
Foul by Tadic is penalised immediately. Once again the Referee is positioned very close when making the decision.
