Hackett’s Verdict: Season to date

Hackett’s Verdict: Season to date

    Mark Clattenburg

Once again we must ask the PGMOL why they are NOT appointing their number one referee Mark Clattenburg to games in recognition of the quality performances he delivers and the safest pair of hands to control the big games.

Martin Atkinson in recent months has been in top form and along with Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor and Mike Dean have officiated 8 games season to date against Mark Clattenburg’s 5.

Even the men who have delivered games with major errors, Craig Pawson and Robert Madley, have been appointed to more games than Mark Clattenburg.

Any business would make use of their top resource and it is difficult over the years to understand why the PGMOL have failed to support their number one referee.

I also wonder when the PGMOL will put some trust into the new boys on the block and appoint Paul Tierney and Stuart Attwell to more regular appointments.

We all know that regular games for players improve performance and this is the same for referees. If you have promoted them to the top echelon then you must be confident that they are good enough.

Graham Scott to date has been left pondering why he became a professional referee with the Select Group. I do think that referees such as Craig Pawson need more work done on the coaching side to improve their dynamic sprinting to enable them to maintain improved contact with the game when it moves at pace, end to end in the field of play.

The appointments also demonstrate at this early stage of the season that the PGMOL have little faith in a couple of referees and frankly they need to take the appropriate action and drop them from the list and bring some more new faces into the group.

In the last two weeks we have witnessed Martin Atkinson, one of our top referees lose form, and frankly it is unfair to keep appointing him to games. He needs more time to recover from his journeys into Europe and the week in week out appointments to the top encounters.
